who am I?

Hello.  My name’s Tom Hulme & I’m a Design Director at IDEO in London – I help companies redesign themselves and develop new offers.  I also Founded OpenIDEO – IDEO’s platform for open innovation.  My background is in Physics and entrepreneurship.  I am also proud to be a Referrer at HackFwd – my profile is here. My Linkedin profile is here.

I’m passionate about taking new stuff to market.  I thought I’d write this blog because (counter-intuitively) I believe that now is a great time to innovate. We’re in a time of great flux – economic, technological and cultural which will shake up markets and be the making of many businesses.  Joseph Schumpeter famously likened capitalism to a “perennial gale of creative destruction” – the gale has been more like a tornado recently.

wēijī is the Chinese word for crisis – I find it inspiring because it comprises the symbols for ‘danger’ and ‘opportunity’ (although this is certainly up for debate if you look here).

My blog’s entries are a standard format – I present context as ‘danger’ and a company’s creative approach as ‘opportunity’.  I then offer a quick provocation that I hope might offer you some inspiration…

Anyway, it’s work in progress and as you’ll be able to tell I’m new to this stuff – if you have any ideas for improvements please do email me here.

Thanks,

Tom

  2. thulme,

Just wanted to take a moment to thank you for all of your well spoken insight on the topic of design thinking and start-ups.

Over the past months I have been dedicating all of my efforts into designing a pitch for a brand
I call CREW or Creative Real-estate Enterprise World-wide. Struggling through extremely stressful and difficult financial times, I have managed to stay the coarse and push out what I have been calling my, “greatest act”. It was basically all out or extinction.

My journey took me from being a self made designer//real-estate millionaire doing what I love before I was 25, to it driving me to a point of being temporarily homeless, I never gave into the pressures of my current dilemmas, to hand over dreams and go work for “the man” Instead with my giant desktop computer at my side, I trudged along on a journey that took me across my country and into a whole knew world of consciousness.

Your video presentations helped clarify everything that I needed to build a brand that I know will
one day change the way people literally live in my world (here in the States, Princeton,NJ)

It all came down to my last chance, my “greatest act” but thanks to you, the other great people of IDEO and a whole lot of preparation, today I gave my pitch, and I’m in business!

Thank you so much for taking your time to teach others what you know. I plan to do the same one day.

I would greatly look forward to connecting,

    Proudly,(at last again)
Mark Patrick Streeter of Princeton, NJ

    Hi Tom

So nice to see your blog. Live in Africa and am in the transport business (employed), though am looking to venture out on my own to try otherthings different real soon. As such, was having a discussion last week with a colleague, who mentioned the company IDEOS (had never heard) and the concept behind the business….I was stumped to say the least.

So Today I googled, and there it was…so rich and ripe, and very on point for soon to be entrepreneurs.Am very green on techie terms/ lingo and stuff, therefore I imagined I would be intimidated.

I watched your video: VISUALISE YOUR BUSINESS MODEL IN 15 MINUTES…and I believe it gave me the headstart/ pump up that I needed. Very clear, and inspiring.

I felt I should say “Thank you”. You have no idea what you just did! (and it is good :)

    Hi Tom

Thank you for your time to read my email. I wanted to send you some documents and show a demo of a project of ours which I and my partner Deepak have made. We have had talks with Single Investors and think that an Incubation might be most suitable at this stage. Due to Fantasy shopper being funded recently , we believe that our application that basically allows photo tagging of consumer goods in images , like for example in Facebook, could be a sucess. There is also current demand in America for such an app as one investor told us.

I live in Berlin and we see this as a great place to start a company as well. HackFwd has a great take on fresh ideas and be an honour for us if we were selected.

I look forward to your response

    Thanks

    christian
