startup tools

I’m a few iterations into a business model framework that’s I find useful when working with startups / clients, this was heavily inspired by the work of Alex Osterwalder, Gary Hamel and Michael Porter. -

Download a high res version here or watch this video outlining it:

HackFwd: Visualize Your Business Model in 15 Minutes Flat from IDEO on Vimeo.

You can also try the tool out yourself with our interactive business model builder here

In addition I launched an open Google Doc presentation to outline some of my favourite Startup Tools and invited contributions from everyone else.  Wired wrote a short piece on it here. The great contributions from over 200 people and the fact that the doc is completely open (and I’ve only had to reset it once) is a reminder of something that I think Wikipedia also taught us – the vast majority of people are wonderful…

You can launch the presentation in full screen with working links below by clicking on the expand icon:

    Hello Mister Hulme,

i study marketingcommunication at the design akademie berlin in Germany and i will use your business model framework to explain and visualize an innovative startup. This is a great part of my bachelor thesis, therefore i need further informations. I follow you now for months and watched all your videos etc. about this model and your other topics and i just want to know if you have any further informations like a written down factsheet or stuff like that about the model.

It would be very kind if you contact me in fact you can help me out with any informations.

Thank you for reading and your inspiration.

    Kind regards.

  3. Hi Tom,

I have been using your business model recently and found it very effective. It is very clearly and logically defined and is well explained by your Hack Fwd introduction video. So firstly thanks for that.

I got to thinking that it could be turned into a really useful application and made available for free (of course). I have started to map out the concept in terms of menus, functions and visual communication. In short, i would like to build on your graphical layout, merging it with the descriptive content from you talk and also adding your video within the application for reference. As a self contained app I think this would provide a really useable app for all kinds of statups.

It may be possible to expand the concept to enable groups to participate on business models, collating their thoughts, bookmarks, images, charts etc… to one location. Sharing, reviewing and presenting business models could also be facilitated really well from it but obviously this all cost time and money.

I am an industrial designer and would be willing to donate time to this. I was wondering what you thought of the idea and whether you knew of any developers that would be able to match my offer to make it happen.

    Regards,
    Nick

    Thanks,short and crisp presentation video!.

Iv had some experience doing workshops on business modelling and service system modelling, but have found that it takes time for the participants to grasp the meaning of the key words like ‘value’, ‘best in class’ and other such terminologies. I am still struggling to find a good way to communicate and have a shared understanding of these concepts in a workshop setup. Any advice is appreciated :) . I am thinking of providing sensitisation material prior to the workshops as my next experiment to address this issue.
